Two new Russian-built Kilo-class submarines were commissioned into the Algerian Navy at the naval base in Oran on Wednesday, January 9.

Named Ouarsenis and Hoggar, the two Project 636 or Improved Kilo-class submarines were originally ordered by Algeria from Saint Petersburg-based Admiralty Shipyard in 2014 and delivered in 2018.

These are the third and fourth Improved Kilo-class ships to join the Algerian Navy after Messali el Hadj and Akram Pacha, which were commissioned in 2009.
