UK defence technology company the Babcock International Group has been selected by Sweden's Saab to support the design for the development of the Swedish Royal Navy's new Luleå-class corvettes.

Saab has been commissioned by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to design four ships for the Swedish Royal Navy. Babcock will initially provide engineering support, including structural design and auxiliary systems, to assist Saab in complete the basic design phase.

Babcock and Saab will also work closely together to identify potential export markets for the Luleå-class design.

Saab Kockums will build four examples of the class for the Swedish Royal Navy. Deliveries are scheduled for the 2030-2035 timeframe.

The Luleå-class corvettes will each measure more than 100 metres long, making them the largest ships in Swedish naval service.
