Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has been selected to supply the Royal Moroccan Navy with a new offshore patrol vessel (OPV), the company said via social media on Friday, January 8.

The selection of Navantia for the newbuilding project was confirmed by Spanish finance minister María Jesús Montero during a recent visit to the company's San Fernando shipyard.

The 80-metre OPV will be the first of two slated for Morocco. Both vessels will utilise the same design as that of the Avante-class ships that Navantia has built for the navies of Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.
