Russian shipbuilder Pella Shipyards is launching the Russian Navy's second Project 2280 small missile boat at St Petersburg this month.
To be named Typhoon, the boat is the second in a class of 18 envisioned units. The lead ship, Uragan, was launched in July at Leningrad.
The Russian Navy Project 22800 "Karakut" is a new class of corvette designed to perform a wide range of missions.
Designed by Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau, the Kalibr cruise missile-armed boats reach speeds of 30 knots and displace 800 tonnes.
The 67-metre boats carry a 76.2mm AK-176MA naval gun, two 30mm cannons and a 12.7mm heavy machine gun.
Up to 26 ships of this class will be built before 2025 to replace Project 11356 frigates at Pella Shipyard (18), Zelenodolsk Shipyard (five) and More Shipyard (three). Each newbuild takes around 32 months.
