Royal Navy commissions patrol ship HMS Tamar

The Royal Navy formally welcomed the River-class offshore patrol vessel (OPV) HMS Tamar into service in a ceremony on Thursday, December 17.

Built by BAE Systems, the 90-metre, 2,000-tonne Tamar has space for up to 50 crewmembers and is armed with a 30-millimetre autocannon and two 7.62-millimetre machine guns.

The OPV is the seventh Royal Navy ship to be named in honour of the River Tamar in England. It has been assigned to the Royal Navy's Overseas Patrol Squadron.
