NRP Setúbal, the Portuguese Navy's newest offshore patrol vessel (OPV), was commissioned into service during a formal ceremony on Friday, December 28.
It is the fourth ship of the Viana do Castelo-class to be commissioned into service. Six more vessels of the class are expected to join the fleet as part of a contract worth €500 million (US$574.05 million).
Setúbal has a length of 83.1 metres, a width of 12.95 metres, a displacement of 1,600 tonnes, and a speed of 20 knots. Armament consists of a 30-millimetre Oto Melara Marlin autocannon, two 7.62-millimetre light machine guns, and two mine launching systems.
The vessel will also be equipped for launch and recovery of unmanned systems.
