The Polish Ministry of Defence, through its Armament Inspectorate, has awarded local shipbuilding consortium PGZ-Miecznik a contract for the construction of three new frigates for the country's navy.

The vessels will be primarily used for maritime territorial defence in the Baltic Sea but will also be available to support NATO operations in other areas. Their armament will include torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and anti-aircraft weapon systems.

The PGZ-Miecznik consortium is led by Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and also includes Polish Navy Shipyard and Remontowa Shipbuilding.

Although the total contract value has not been disclosed, Polish officials said it is the largest single contract ever awarded to the country's defence manufacturing industry.
