An industrial partnership of French companies consisting of shipbuilders Naval Group and Chantiers de l'Atlantique, Dassault Aviation, and nuclear reactor manufacturer TechnicAtome has been tasked with conducting studies related to the development of a new class of nuclear-powered aircraft carrier slated to enter service in 2038.

After a sketch phase, Naval Group and its industrial partners will be in charge of carrying out a two-year preliminary design study, which will be followed by detailed design studies that will finally precede the development and construction of the ship itself.

Naval Group's scope of the work will also include integration of catapult launch systems, arresting gear, and combat and navigation systems. The company will also be responsible for integrating facilities to support the operations of the tactical aircraft that will serve as the carrier's main offensive capability.

The new carrier will replace Charles de Gaulle, France's first nuclear-powered surface warship and the French Navy's current flagship, which has been in service since 2001.
