The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) commissioned its second and final Maya-class guided missile destroyer in a ceremony in Yokohama on Friday, March 19.

The commissioning of JS Haguro, named after a mountain in Yamagata Prefecture, comes exactly one year after that of sister vessel JS Maya.

Haguro was built by Japan Marine United (JMU). It measures 169.9 by 22.2 metres and is powered by four GE LM2500 gas turbines that deliver a speed of 30 knots.

The ship's missile armament will enable it to destroy airborne targets as well as ballistic missiles.
