The Hellenic Navy commissioned a new warship into service on Tuesday, July 28.
The 62- by 9.5-metre HS Karathanasis is the sixth Roussen-class fast attack craft to be built by local company Elefsis Shipyards in cooperation with BAE Systems subsidiary BAE Systems Surface Ships (formerly Vosper Thornycroft).
Armament includes surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, one 76-millimetre naval gun, and two 30-millimetre autocannons.
The vessel honours Lieutenant Christodoulos Karathanasis, a Hellenic Navy officer who was killed during a brief but violent three-day dispute between Greece and Turkey over the Imia islands in the Aegean Sea in January 1996.
