Canada's Irving Shipbuilding has cut the first steel for the fifth Harry DeWolf-class Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) that the company will supply to the Royal Canadian Navy.
The initial 3,734 kilograms of steel will form the keel and other areas of the future HMCS Frédérick Rolette. Once completed, the ship will measure 103.6 by 19 metres and displace 6,615 tonnes.
The ship honours Frédérick Rolette, a Quebec-born Royal Navy officer who became known mainly for his exploits in the War of 1812.
