The keel-laying ceremony for the first Doha-class corvette ordered from Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defence took place on Tuesday, November 27, at the Italian shipbuilder's facilities in Muggiano.

The corvette, which will be delivered in 2021, is expected to perform a variety of tasks including combat patrols, surveillance, and search and rescue.

The first Doha-class corvette will be 107 metres long and 14.7 metres wide with accommodations for 112 persons including 98 crewmembers, one rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB), and flight deck and hangar space for one NH90 helicopter. A combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) engine will give it a maximum speed of 28 knots.
