United Shipbuilding Corporation's (USC) Sredne-Nevsky Shipbuilding Plant handed over a new Project 12700 minesweeper to the Russian Navy in a ceremony on Friday, August 20.

Georgiy Kurbatov, which was commissioned into service later that same day, is the fifth Alexandrit-class minesweeper to be handed over to the navy. The vessel will be assigned to the Black Sea Fleet.

The newbuild has a length of 62 metres, a beam of 10 metres, a displacement of 890 tonnes, a speed of 16 knots, and space for 44 crewmembers. Its mine countermeasures equipment includes autonomous and unmanned underwater vehicles.

Design work on Georgiy Kurbatov was provided by USC's Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau.
