The Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) confirmed on Thursday, February 28, that the country's navy will take delivery of a decommissioned South Korean warship in June of this year.

The 1987-built Pohang-class corvette ex-ROKS Chungju, which the South Korean Navy decommissioned in 2016, will be drydocked for repairs prior to the formal handover to its new operators.

Meanwhile, the first cadre of Philippine Navy crew who will serve aboard ex-Chungju are currently in South Korea undergoing training in the use of the ship's onboard systems.

The 88- by 10-metre vessel will be renamed BRP Conrado Yap after a Philippine Army officer and recipient of the Medal of Valor, the Philippines' highest military decoration, who was killed in action in the Korean War.
