The Egyptian Navy has formally welcomed the frigate ENS Bernees into service.
The ship is the second of two FREMM frigates that were originally built by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy. Both vessels were acquired by Egypt prior to completion of construction.
Like sister vessel ENS Al-Galala, Bernees has a length of 44.1 metres, a beam of six metres, a draught of 2.7 metres, and space for 199 crew and other personnel. A propulsion system consisting of a GE LM2500 32MW gas turbine, two Jeumont Electric 2.5MW electric motors, and four diesel generators propel the ship to a maximum speed of 27 knots and a cruising speed of 15.6 knots.
Armament includes 127-millimetre and 76-millimetre naval guns, 25-millimetre autocannons, surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, and torpedoes.
