The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has welcomed the first Resolve-Class naval support ship Asterix into its fleet.

Operated and managed by Federal Fleet Services as part of a five-year contract and commanded by a civilian master, Asterix will provide the navy with fuels, cargo, ammunition, a floating hospital for up to 350 evacuees, a platform for two helicopters and quarters for humanitarian and rescue operations.

Halifax-based Davie Shipbuilding said more than 900 Canadian companies participated in the build of Asterix.

The vessel can carry 10,000 tonnes of marine fuel and more than 100 tonnes of aviation fuel with freshwater tanks.

The galley on Asterix can also provide 500 cooked meals per hour.
