The Indonesian Navy has commissioned into service KRI Semarang, a newbuild landing platform dock (LPD) delivered by state-owned shipbuilder PAL.
The vessel is the fifth Makassar-class LPD to be delivered to the Indonesian Navy. However, unlike its sisters, it will be operated exclusively as a hospital ship.
Semarang is also the newer of two currently active Indonesian Navy hospital ships. The other hospital ship, KRI Dr Soeharso, was built by South Korea's Daesun Shipbuilding and Engineering and delivered to the navy in 2003.
Semarang has a length of 125 metres, a width of 22 metres, a draught of 4.9 metres, accommodations for up to 518 people, and the ability to launch and recover two landing craft vehicle personnel (LCVP).
