The Indian Ministry of Defence has awarded local shipbuilder Larsen and Toubro a contract for the construction of two new mult-purpose vessels (MPVs) for the Indian Navy.

The vessels' duties will include maritime surveillance and patrols, launching and recovery of torpedos and targets during training exercises, towing, logistics support, salvage support, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR). In the latter role, each vessel will have limited hospital facilities.

The MPVs are scheduled for delivery beginning in May 2025.
