Spanish media reports that a Ghanaian national working as a crewmember on a Spanish-flagged fishing vessel died after he fell into the sea off the Isles of Scilly in the UK on Wednesday, February 15.
The 52-year-old victim was engaged in fishing activities on the trawler Novo Alborada some 265 kilometres southeast of Scilly when he fell overboard from the vessel's stern on the morning (local time) of Wednesday.
The crew then contacted HM Coastguard to request for assistance in locating and recovering the sailor, who was wearing a lifejacket at the time.
The drifting fisherman was found by the crew of a passing commercial ship, which then reported his location to the trawler. The individual was pulled out of the water that same morning but was pronounced deceased shortly afterwards.
Novo Alborada is reportedly headed back for its homeport of Vigo with the body of the deceased fisherman on board. The vessel has an estimated arrival date of Friday, February 17.
The accident is the second fatal mishap to befall a crewmember on Novo Alborada.
On June 24, 2018, while the trawler was off Ireland's County Cork, a 51-year-old Sierra Leonean sailor suffered injuries after he was struck by a hook and a shackle connected to a trawl door that had fallen overboard. This individual died in hospital in Cork three days later.
