One person was killed in a work-related accident on a fishing vessel undergoing repairs at the Port of Vigo in Spain at around 14:00 local time on Monday, June 8.

The victim, a 53-year-old dockyard worker, had been carrying out repairs in one of the compartments on the UK-flagged trawler Argos Vigo when a hatch cover suddenly and unexpectedly closed shut, trapping and crushing him in the process.

Rescue and firefighting teams were despatched to the scene. Tragically, the victim's injuries were too severe that he died before he could be brought to hospital.

Police investigators are still working to identify the cause of the accident.

Argos Vigo has been docked at Vigo since May 25.
