Netherlands-based non-government organisation The Ocean Cleanup will operate one of its two newest waste-collecting vessels in Malaysia later this year.

The barge Interceptor 005, along with sister Interceptor 006, is currently being built at Konecranes MHE-Demag in Klang, Malaysia, and is scheduled to be completed in May.

The Ocean Cleanup said the two vessels will feature key improvements over the older barges in its fleet. These will include: a conveyor belt widened to 2.5 metres to allow for a less obstructive flow and better distribution to the dumpsters; a widened hull and dumpsters to make the transfer of rubbish from the conveyor to the dumpsters easier and more effective; monocrystalline solar cell panels and a smart energy storage system that is smaller but just as efficient as its predecessors; and a modular catamaran design to facilitate containerisation and fast deployment.
