Russian media reports that transport prosecutors have begun an investigation into an incident wherein a fire broke out on a berthed fish transport vessel at the Port of Murmansk late last week.

The investigation is being conducted to determine whether failure to comply with safety regulations had resulted in the fire incident on the locally-registered transport vessel Printsessa Arktiki.

The blaze on Printsessa Arktiki ignited in the area between the hold and the engine compartment at around 14:25 local time on Wednesday, January 4. The blaze was extinguished a little over an hour later and all seven people who were on board at the time were safely evacuated by responding firefighters.

Officials said the fire was limited to an area no larger than three square metres.

A preliminary report said the fire broke out as welding works were being performed on board.
