Russian port operator Rosmorport has launched a competitive tender for the construction of a new icebreaker that will be powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system.
The vessel will be used to ensure year-round navigability of all seaports in Russia's Baltic basin. Secondary duties will include towing of vessels in distress, firefighting, research support, underwater inspections, oil spill response, cargo transport, and search and rescue.
Construction is scheduled to commence in December 2024.
The icebreaker will have an LOA of 119.8 metres, a beam of 27.5 metres, a maximum draught of 8.5 metres, a displacement of 14,322 tonnes at full load, and space for 35 crew and 22 other personnel. It will be capable of sailing at speeds of up to 17 knots as well as continuous sailing in surface ice up to 1.5 metres thick.
Rosmorport said the vessel will be built under Project 21900M2, which is a sub-class of the Project 21900 icebreaker series.
