Earlier this week, the Stena Line Ro-Pax ferry Stena Germanica travelled from Sweden to Germany with its dual-fuel engines powered by a new type of recycled methanol.
Stena Line said the new fuel is recycled from residual steel gases, which are by-products of the steel manufacturing industry, to help reduce reliance on traditional diesel.
The new methanol was developed as part of the From Residual Steel gasses to Methanol (FReSMe) project, which is funded by the EU via the Horizon 2020 program. The FReSMe project aims to demonstrate the whole process that enables the CO2 captured from the steel industry to produce methanol fuel that may be used in the marine transport sector.
