Danish transport company Molslinjen has confirmed that one of its ferries under its Øresundslinjen (formerly ForSea Ferries) brand will undergo modernisation works that entail replacement of its conventional propulsion system with batteries.

Hamlet will be the third ferry in Øresundslinjen fleet to undergo the retrofit with the objective of reducing the company's need for engines that run on fossil fuels.

The battery pack is scheduled to be delivered and installed on Hamlet in the first half of 2025. Øresundslinjen expects the operation of the retrofitted ferry will help reduce the CO2 emissions on the route across the Øresund Strait between the ports of Helsingør in Denmark and Helsingborg in Sweden.

The battery system is tailored for a minimum operational lifespan of 10 years without requiring replacement. It can be recharged in both ports in as little as 11 minutes on average.

The battery system will be supplied by Echandia.
