Philippine shipbuilder Metallica Marine Consultancy has held a keel-laying ceremony for a small trimaran-type Ro-Pax vessel that will be partially powered by ocean waves.
It will be built as part of an ongoing joint project by Metallica, the Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and Aklan State University (ASU).
Waves will drive hydraulic pumps fitted in the vessel's outriggers. The pumps will be connected to an onboard generator that will supply electricity, which in turn will provide power for the engines.
The vessel will be built in Metallica's shipyard in Aklan province in the Central Philippines. Once completed, it will be able to accommodate 150 passengers, four four-wheeled utility vans, and 15 motorcycles.
