The government of Canada has awarded a US$155 million contract to purchase the Cyprus-flagged Ro-Pax ferry Villa de Teror as an interim measure to replace the older vessel Madeleine, which is nearing the end of its expected service life.

Villa de Teror will be renamed Madeleine II. It will undergo essential work while being drydocked before its expected arrival in Canada in the spring of 2021.

Upon arrival, the vessel will then undergo refit as required in Canada in order to provide ferry services between the Îles-de-la-Madeleine archipelago in Quebec to Souris in Prince Edward Island from the summer of 2021 until 2026, when local shipyard Chantier Davie is expected to deliver the permanent new replacement vessel.
