Dutch designer C-Job has delivered a concept design for five fully-electric car and passenger ferries on behalf of the City of Amsterdam.

The electric roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferries will be fitted with batteries that will be charged in a maximum of four minutes when passengers and vehicles are unloaded.

The 41-metre vessels have a total loading capacity of 245 tonnes and can carry up to 20 cars, four trucks or 400 passengers.

The design has movable dividing railings between passengers and vehicles that allow crew to adjust the space allocated to each depending on demand.

In addition to 'plug-in' electric capabilities, the new ferries will also be able to recharge their own batteries using an on-board diesel generator for non-standard operations.

The ferries will also be able to transport oversize loads of up to 100 tonnes with an axle weight of 12 tonnes.

The new vessels are expected to replace existing ferries operated by GVB on three routes west of Amsterdam.
