Four people are confirmed dead after a boat carrying tourists sank near the city of Cancun on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Monday, January 29.

The tour boat La Diosa del Mar was sailing between the resort island of Isla Mujeres and the municipality of Puerto Juárez when it was struck by a swell, causing it to take on water and eventually sink on the afternoon (local time) of Monday.

Local news outlets reported that the boat's 15 other occupants have all been rescued. However, one female passenger is reportedly in serious condition and is being treated in hospital in Cancun.

The deceased included three adults and a ten-year-old child.

The boat's captain was also among the survivors. He has since been detained by local authorities in connection with the incident.

The Mexican Navy, the Mexican Red Cross, and local police and fire departments were among the agencies that participated in the search and rescue/recovery effort.

Prosecutors have begun their investigation into the tragedy.
