London-based security consultancy the EOS Risk Group has reported that a passenger boat was hijacked by unidentified perpetrators in Cross River State in southern Nigeria on Monday, January 17.

The ferry was transiting the Calabar River from Marina Safe Journey harbour in Calabar to Oron with an unconfirmed number of passengers when the attack took place. It was then taken to an unknown destination with the passengers still on board.

The Nigerian Navy learned of the incident and has since deployed gunboats to patrol the river and locate the hijacked ferry, its occupants, and the kidnappers.

EOS said that one of its personnel is waiting to speak with concerned parties who may require intelligence-led risk assessments, escorts, or armed guards in this region of Nigeria.
