China's AFAI Southern Shipyard has launched a new fast catamaran ferry ordered by Hong Kong transport operator Sun Ferry.

Upon completion, Xin Ming Xhu X will measure 44 by 11 metres and will have capacity for 500 passengers. Two MTU 1,440kW engines driving Kongsberg KaMeWa waterjets will propel the vessel to speeds of up to 30 knots.

The ferry's main deck will features spacious seating for 299 passengers including six wheelchair spaces and two dedicated areas for passengers travelling with pets. There will also be stroller storage areas and private change table facilities.

Large internal luggage storage spaces have been incorporated into the design of the main deck, including a protected seven-square-metre cargo area.

The upper deck can accommodate an additional 201 passengers. Also on the upper deck is a large, elevated wheelhouse that provides the crew with a 360-degree view.

All interior spaces on the ferry will be air-conditioned.

Xin Ming Xhu X belongs to a series that includes Xin Ming Xhu VIII, which was delivered to Sun Ferry earlier this year. Design work on the vessels was completed in compliance with China Classification Society rules.
