German operator Schlepp und Fahrgesellschaft Kiel (SFK) has awarded Holland Shipyards Group a contract for the construction of a new fully electric ferry.

The vessel will be the fifth ferry to be built by the same shipyard for SFK. The first four ferries are hybrid-powered vessels, including one already in service.

The fifth ferry, to be named Wellingdorf, will measure 24.7 by 6.5 metres and will have a 1,092kWh total battery capacity. An array of 20 solar panels will be fitted to help supply power for the onboard systems.

Wellingdorf is scheduled to enter service with SFK in the middle of 2022.
