Vedettes de Brehat, a vessel operator that serves a regular route between Northwestern Brittany and nearby Brehat Island, has awarded local shipbuilder Piriou a contract for the construction of two aluminium ferries.

The 26- by seven-metre ferries will utilise a design by naval architects Mer Et Design. A specially designed hard-chine hull will be incorporated on each vessel to improve performance in choppy seas, thereby reducing fuel consumption.

Each ferry will have space for up to 255 passengers and five crewmembers. Power will be provided by two 750kW IMO Tier III-compliant engines.

Deliveries will commence in the first quarter of 2023.
