Norwegian transport company Boreal is set to operate five new electric ferries on the waters passing through Oslo beginning in 2021 under an agreement with local transport authority Ruter.

Under Boreal subsidiary Boreal Sjø, the first of the five ferries will commence passenger services to and from the islands in the inner Oslofjord in November 2021 while the remaining four vessels are expected to begin operating on the route by the following summer.

The Multi Maritime-designed electric ferries will each have a length of 35 metres and capacity for 350 passengers whereas the vessels currently serving the inner Oslofjord islands could transport only up to 236.

The contract between Boreal and Ruter is set to expire in 2034.
