Hurtigruten officially named the cruise ship Roald Amundsen in a ceremony in Antarctica on Friday, November 8.

The 140- by 23-metre vessel was named in honour of Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen, a Norwegian polar explorer who was also the first person to cross Antarctica and reach the South Pole.

It is the first of two hybrid ships to be built by Kleven Verft for Hurtigruten.

The christening of Roald Amundsen marks the first time in history that a ship was named in Antarctica.
