The first turbine at Hornsea 1, the world's largest offshore wind farm, has been installed and is now producing electricity, Denmark's Ørsted has said in a statement.
When fully operational, the 1,218MW Hornsea 1 will be nearly double the size of the world's current largest offshore wind farm, Walney Extension, and will be capable of powering well over one million homes in the UK.
The project is located 120 kilometres off the Yorkshire Coast and will consist of 174 7MW turbines. The majority of the wind farm's blades are manufactured in Hull, from where they are shipped to the Hornsea Zone.
The wind farm is a joint venture between Ørsted and US-based Global Infrastructure Partners. The project began offshore construction over a year ago and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2020.
