TKMS unveils new modular UUV

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has unveiled a new type of large modular unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) for civilian maritime use.

The Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) will be used for diverse duties including transport and deployment of payloads, applications in the offshore wind and oil and gas industries, and exploration of sea areas with difficult access, such as the Arctic ice regions.

Where necessary, the power supply system may be supported by a lithium-ion battery module.

TKMS claims that, independent of wind and weather, the MUM UUVs can operate 24/7, 365 days a year.

The first example is scheduled to be available to commercial clients in 2024.

The MUM project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. TKMS' partners on the project include Atlas Elektronik, EvoLogics, the University of Rostock, TU Berlin, Fraunhofer Institute, the German Aerospace Center, and the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Structures.
