The latest succession of offshore projects worldwide includes both completed works and new ones in the pipeline. There's been plenty of action in offshore wind in Europe, but activity has also been picking up in the drilling and installation segments, particularly in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Borssele Wind Farm Site V fully commissioned
The Two Towers consortium consisting of Van Oord, Investri Offshore, and Green Giraffe has confirmed that the Borssele Wind Farm Site V has been fully commissioned and will soon begin supplying renewable energy to up to 25,000 Dutch households.
Van Oord was selected as the balance of plant contractor for this project, which the company claimed was completed on time and within budget despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
Van Oord deployed a wide range of equipment at the project, including the offshore installation vessel Aeolus, the trencher Dig-It, and the cable-laying vessel Nexus.
Borssele V features two Vestas 9.5MW turbines, generating sufficient energy to provide renewable energy to 25,000 Dutch households.
Van Oord, Vattenfall ink four-year framework agreement
Fresh from its recent success at the Borssele V development, Van Oord maintains its momentum, winning an award for a four-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract from Vattenfall.
Working through its MPI Offshore organisation, Van Oord will provide jackup and associated lifting services for main component exchanges across Vattenfall's portfolio of offshore wind farms.
The contract includes planned and unplanned maintenance campaigns for approximately 600 Vattenfall wind turbine generators. The parties both have the option of extending the contract for another year.
Sapura Energy on a roll with four new contracts at home and abroad
Malaysian offshore services company Sapura Energy is a prime example of resilience amidst the pandemic as proven by a rapid succession of recently awarded projects. Specifically, the company's various engineering and construction (E&C) and drilling divisions have been awarded four new contracts by clients in the Middle East and much closer to home.
First is a contract from Saudi Aramco, issued under a long-term agreement (LTA) signed with the oil and gas producer. The work was awarded to Sapura Fabrication and Sapura Saudi Arabia Company.
The contract involves multiple projects in the Zuluf, Ribyan, and Abu Safah oil fields offshore Saudi Arabia. Its scope of work includes the engineering, procurement, fabrication, transportation, installation, and pre-commissioning of jackets for three new wellhead platforms at the three oil fields, expected to be completed by the first quarter of calendar year 2022.
Sapura Energy was selected as Saudi Aramco's LTA contractor in 2018, after successfully undergoing an extensive assessment of operational and safety requirements.
In Thailand, Sapura Energy Thailand has secured a contract for the installation of wellhead platforms and pipelines and the removal of wellhead platforms from Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production (CTEP), Chevron Offshore Thailand, and Chevron Pattani. The works are expected to be completed by fourth quarter of financial year (FY) 2022.
At its home base in Malaysia, Sapura Offshore has been awarded the transportation and installation of offshore pipelines under the Pan Malaysia Transportation and Installation of Offshore Facilities umbrella contract, by PTTEP Sarawak Oil.
The contract scope of work comprises the transportation and installation of approximately ten kilometres of underwater pipeline, offshore Sarawak. The works are expected to be completed by May 2021.
Sapura Offshore also won a sub-contract for the transportation and installation of a wellhead platform jacket and topside at the Kasawari Gas Development Project, by Heerema Marine Contractors. The scope of work comprises project management, procurement and subcontract as well as engineering works; expected to be completed by second quarter of calendar year 2021.
DEME secures transport and installation work at Hollandse Kust developments
DEME Offshore has been awarded a contract for the transport and installation of the jackets and topsides for two Hollandse Kust offshore substations. DEME Offshore will also supply and install scour protection for both substations, which will be installed at the Hollandse Kust noord and west Alpha wind farms.
The contract has been awarded by the joint venture ENGIE Solutions-Iemants, a subsidiary of Smulders, that is responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, and offshore installation of the two substations.
Installation of the scour protection and jacket for Hollandse Kust noord is planned for the second half of 2021, while the topside for Hollandse Kust noord and jacket for west Alpha will be installed during the summer of 2022. The topside for Hollandse Kust west Alpha will be installed in 2023.
The offshore substations will be located in the Dutch North Sea. TenneT will realise the grid connections for these wind farms.
DEME bags Arcadis Ost EPCI contract
DEME Offshore has also been awarded a substantial engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contract for the foundations at Parkwind's Arcadis Ost I offshore wind farm. The monopiles will be the largest ever installed in Europe with a weight of around 2,000 tonnes each.
The Arcadis Ost I wind farm is developed by the Belgian offshore wind specialist Parkwind and has a capacity of 257 MW. The wind farm will be located in the Baltic Sea, northeast of the island of Rügen in the coastal waters of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.
Manufactured by Steelwind in Germany, the 28 monopile foundations will be about 100 metres long and weigh around 2,000 tonnes each. One of the 28 foundations will support the offshore substation.
The monopiles for the wind turbines will not be equipped with common transition pieces but will have a direct connection with the turbine tower.
DEME Offshore will deploy the DP3 offshore installation vessel Orion for this project.
Qatargas taps Saipem for EPCI work
Saipem has received from a letter of award from Qatargas for the development of the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Project, located offshore of the north-east coast of the Qatar peninsula. The contract is worth approximately US$1.7 billion.
The scope of work will encompass EPCI of various offshore facilities for the extraction and transportation of natural gas. These facilities will include platforms, supporting and connecting structures, subsea cables, and anticorrosion internally cladded pipelines.
The project will also encompass the decommissioning of a pipeline and other significant modifications to existing offshore facilities.
Pipe-laying and lifting operations will be executed in water depths of approximately 65 metres.
The project aims to increase the early gas field production capacity to 110 million tonnes per annum.
TechnipFMC awarded work off Egypt, Malaysia
TechnipFMC (has been awarded an EPCI contract by NIpetco and PetroAmriya, two joint ventures between Energean, Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) for a subsea tieback located offshore Egypt on the North El Amriya and North Idku concession.
TechnipFMC will design, manufacture, deliver and install subsea equipment including the subsea production system, subsea trees, production manifolds, umbilicals, flexible pipelines, jumpers and associated subsea and topside controls.
Meanwhile, TechnipFMC, through subsidiary FMC Wellhead Equipment, has been awarded a contract by Petronas Carigali for the provision of front-end engineering design, and integrated engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of a subsea production system, umbilicals, risers and flowlines for the Limbayong Deepwater Development Project. This contract covers the development of 10 deepwater wells and their tieback to the Limbayong floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit in Malaysia.
TechnipFMC will design, manufacture, deliver and install subsea equipment including subsea trees, manifolds, umbilicals, flexible risers, flowlines, jumpers and other associated subsea hardware for the project.
The project will be executed from TechnipFMC's Kuala Lumpur office.
Lamprell appointed on one of Saudi Aramco's LTA projects
UAE-based Lamprell has been awarded an EPCI contract by Saudi Aramco as part of a long-term agreement programme between the two companies.
Works on this contract will consist of two offshore production deck modules and associated pipeline and subsea cables in Saudi Aramco's Marjan Field. The field is located in the Arabian Gulf off Saudi Arabia's East Coast and is one of the largest oil and gas fields in the region.
