Rijkswaterstaat has awarded the €550 million (US$670 million) contract for the Afsluitdijk project to the Levvel consortium.
Levvel, which comprises Van Oord Aberdeen Infrastructure Partners (46 per cent), BAM PPP PGGM Infrastructure Coöperatie (46 per cent) and RebelValley (eight per cent), will be responsible for the design, build, finance and 25-year maintenance program for the strengthened Afsluitdijk.
The 32-kilometre-long Afsluitdijk has protected large parts of the Netherlands against flooding from the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer since 1932.
Van Oord Chief Executive Officer Pieter van Oord said the Afsluitdijk, once reinforced, will be able to withstand a storm that happens once in every 10,000 years.
Construction works are expected to start in the autumn of 2018, and completed in 2023.
