A consortium formed by Dutch engineering companies Van Oord, Hakkers, and Beens has completed works related to the enlargement of the Twente Canal that courses through the provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel.
With the enlarging of the waterway, the inland ports of Almelo, Hengelo, and Enschede will become more easily accessible and larger vessels will be able to sail through more safely and smoothly.
The Van Oord-Hakkers-Beens consortium completed the works in fulfillment of a contract awarded by the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat). The works included replacement of the sheet piling over a stretch of 35 kilometres and applying a self-sealing layer at the bottom of the canal.
The consortium also created 13 kilometres of riverbanks.
