Dutch non-profit Natuurmonumenten and the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) has selected local marine contractor Royal Boskalis Westminster to construct two new artificial islands at the Marker Wadden nature preserve in Markermeer Lake.

The new islands will have a total surface area of 300 hectares. Like the five existing Marker Wadden islands, these will be built with silt, clay, peat, and sand from the bottom of the lake.

The new islands have a scheduled completion date of 2023, by which time Marker Wadden will have a total surface area of 1,300 hectares.
