Royal Boskalis Westminster has won a tender to construct an artificial island in Amsterdam's IJmeer lake next to the IJburg islands.

The €85 million (US$100 million) project involves the construction of an artificial island in the IJmeer lake for the development of residential house.

About 82 hectares of land will be created by constructing soft and hard bank protection and filling the reclamation area with nine million cubic metres of sand. About 3,500 kilometres of vertical drains will be used to improve the soil.

Boskalis will also create a three-hectare nature area consisting of reeds and a mussel bed.

The project includes an option to create an additional 53 hectares of land.

The municipality of Amsterdam is expected to award the contract in mid-May, with operations starting in the third quarter of 2018.

It is scheduled to be completed in mid-2020.
