The largest dredger under IR class, the 8,000-cubic-metre trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Shanti Sagar 17 has been successfully delivered to Adani Ports and SEZ.

The first of two Beagle 8 TSHDs being built for Adani by Netherlands-based Royal IHC at its Krimpen aan den Ijssel shipyard, the Shanti Sagar 17 was constructed under the special survey of Indian Register of Shipping (IR Class).

The 104.5-metre-long dredgers have a width of 24.2 metres and are designed to have a loaded speed of 13.7 knots. They have two 800mm diameter suction pipes and can reach a dredging depth of 26 metres.

The Shanti Sagar 17 will be deployed for capital dredging with challenging soils, and is equipped with a heavier draghead and additional propulsion power.

Each Beagle 8 is equipped with IHC's Trailspeed Controller (TSC) to maintain a constant speed while dredging and the Eco Pump Controller (EPC) to reduce excessive cavitation and wear and tear.

The second TSHD Shanti Sagar 18 is expected to be delivered in the next week.
