Classification societies American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), DNV, and Lloyd's Register (LR) have each awarded an approval in principle (AIP) for a new design of self-elevating wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) currently being developed by South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

The vessel will be equipped with features that will ensure low-emission operations, such as dual-fuel engines that can also run on LNG, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), and energy storage systems. It will also have a crane capable of lifting up to 2,500 tonnes.

SHI said the WTIV will generate 50 per cent fewer CO2 emissions compared to similar installation vessels that are powered by diesel engines.
