Yanmar Holdings and its subsidiary Yanmar Power Technology Company conducted a field demonstration test of a new maritime fuel cell system in Oita, Japan, on Wednesday, March 24.

The fuel cell system incorporates hydrogen fuel cell modules originally developed for newer motor vehicles manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation. The system, which consists of two fuel cell modules and eight hydrogen tanks, was then installed on a Yanmar 12.4-metre pleasure boat for field testing.

Yanmar said the boat is the first to officially comply with the safety guidelines for hydrogen fuel cell vessels formulated by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

The company said it plans to scale up the fuel cell system by connecting multiple units for use on larger vessels. Commercial application is expected to commence by 2025.
