Faroe Islands seafood company Vardin Pelagic has awarded a contract to Icelandic tech firm Skaginn 3X to design a new automated plant that would be the world's largest pelagic factory.
The factory at Suduroy will replace the previous Skaginn 3X-designed plant that was destroyed by fire in June. Built in 2012, it produced between 800 tonnes and 1,000 tonnes of product per day.
Allowing for an initial capacity of 1,300 tonnes per day, the site has scope to expand capacity to 1,700 tonnes a day.
CEO of Skaginn 3X Ingólfur Árnason said the environmentally friendly factory would use its freezing technology to enhance automation and efficiency.
