Norway's Teige Rederi has expanded its fleet of fishing vessels with the recent acquisition of a large combination purse seiner and trawler fitted with a hybrid propulsion system.

The DNV-classed Sunny Lady was built to a design developed jointly by Norway's Salt Ship Design and Turkey's SU Ship Design. A hybrid LNG and battery arrangement was selected to help maximise operating efficiency while minimising environmental impact.

The second Teige-owned vessel to bear the name Sunny Lady has an LOA of 86.5 metres, a beam of 17.8 metres, a draught of eight metres, and a gross tonnage of 4,800. The propulsion system consists of a 5,500kW main engine designed to run primarily on LNG with diesel serving as a backup and a Corvus Orca Energy 1,017kWh battery to be used for peak shaving operations and regenerating energy during trawling and while at berth.

The main engine drives a 4,200mm propeller to deliver a speed of just over 15 knots. Two Brunvoll thrusters are also fitted to provide additional lateral manoeuvrability while steering is via a Kongsberg Maritime system. Emergency electrical power will be supplied by a Volvo Penta D13MG 360kW generator.

The fishing equipment consists of cranes, seine and trawl winches, and pumps as part of a complete package supplied by MacGregor. Catch is stored in RSW tanks with a total capacity of 2,830 cubic metres and chilled by two 1,500kW plants from PTG FrioNordica. Cflow provided the fish handling system, which also boasts tank cleaning and remote monitoring capability, allowing the operator to be updated on parameters such as temperature, water level, and flow pressure.

The wheelhouse electronics include communications, navigation, and fish-finding gear from Furuno. Seating for the crew was provided by Alu Design and Services while Viking Norsafe fitted the vessel with an MOB boat and a dedicated davit. The accommodation spaces include an entertainment lounge.

Although designed mainly for fishing, Sunny Lady is also capable of facilitating research missions in support of the offshore industry. Specifically, Teige operated the vessel in the summer of 2023 under charter to Norwegian offshore consultancy Ross Offshore. Space was made available for the transport and deployment of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for the execution of mapping and environmental surveys as well as subsea inspection duties.
