Argentine shipyard Astillero Federico Contessi y Cia recently handed over a new freezer trawler to SAFA, a local family-owned fishing company based in Mar del Plata on the country's Atlantic coast.

The RINA-classed Antonia D was built as a multi-purpose freezer vessel that is also capable of trawling and mid-sea fishing of hake, red shrimp, and various other species off the coast of Buenos Aires province. It is the latest in a succession of numerous fishing vessels that Contessi Shipyard built for the same owner, beginning with a vessel that was delivered in 1971. The construction of the new vessel was also done as part of a nationwide program of upgrading the Argentine commercial fishing fleet.

The newbuild has a length of 24.1 metres, a moulded beam of 7.8 metres, a draught of 3.6 metres, and space for 13 crewmembers. Steel was used for the hull while the superstructure is made of aluminium, and a bulbous bow was incorporated to further improve fuel efficiency.

One Yanmar 6EY17W main engine drives a Kaplan five-bladed propeller via a Yanmar YXH-500L gearbox to deliver a maximum speed of 10 knots. Auxiliary power is in the form of two Cummins diesel engines. A Sleipner Side Power SAC700/412-C bow thruster provides added manoeuvrability needed for berthing/unberthing.

A Cummins generator set supplies power for the onboard systems.

The vessel was built to facilitate the direct landing of catch onto ice to preserve its freshness from the moment it is brought onto the deck. The fish hold features conveyor belts and a washing bin from Be-Inox, refrigeration equipment from PM Refrigeracion, and insulation from Nautiplast. The fishing equipment meanwhile includes a complete Ferri package consisting of three electrically-driven winches and two net drums. Ferri also supplied the vessel's anchor winch.

Hempel paint was used for the exterior surfaces.

Antonia D will be used primarily to fish for red shrimp in the Argentine Sea off Mar del Plata while the focus will be on hake and other species during off-season operations in Patagonian waters further south.
