Spanish seafood giant Nueva Pescanova has commissioned Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Armón to construct seven new boats for use in Africa.

Three are 50-metre-long freshwater trawlers for use in Namibia, the other four are 32-metre-long freezer vessels to be used in Mozambique.

News agency EFE reported that the EUR42.5 million (US$50.3 million) contract with the Asturias-based Armón will be signed in coming weeks once financing is completed.

The trawlers, which will be used by Namibian Nueva Pescanova subsidiaries NovaNam and Lalandi, will be built in the Vigo estuary.

The freezer vessels, which will be used for shrimp fishing by Pescamar, will be built in Vigo and Burela (Lugo).

Construction will begin in early 2018, with the last vessels to be delivered in 2020.
