French shipbuilder Piriou has begun its expansion of its operations in Romania with the acquisition of a local yard.
ATG Shipyard, located on the Romanian side of the Danube River in Giurgiu some 60 kilometres south of the capital city Bucharest, is now a 100-per-cent-owned subsidiary of Piriou. The company was formerly a Piriou subcontractor but will now operate under the name Piriou ATG Romania.
At the time of its acquisition by Piriou, ATG had expanded to building vessels and other workboats for the fishing, offshore, and harbour services industries after having initially focused on inland waterway shipping.
The facility covers 15 hectares and includes four 110-metre assembly halls, a 250-metre outfitting quay, and 30,000 square metres of workshop space.
